Making Rustic Pots
I began my clay journey on the wheel and for the better part of the first two decades I was strictly a wheel thrower. I loved the speed, the symmetry, the perfection, all that was made possible on the wheel. However as I started gravitating towards the rustic aesthetic, I began to find the wheel limiting. That’s when I was forced to turn to hand-building. Now my practice is a combination of these two techniques with more of the studio time spent hand-building. My younger self wouldn’t be able to contend with the fact that I would grow to embrace the slow pace of hand-building so much. It’s the desire to create rustic edges on my pots that keeps me exploring this technique more. Here are some snapshots from my studio:
