If you aren't able to make it to the in-person workshop this weekend @companiongallery, join me on Zoom, live on Monday, June 27th at 4:00 PM EST. Link in bio.
The zoom workshop is recorded and will be available for viewing later if you are unable to attend the live session.

Who would have thought pre-pandemic that ceramic workshops could be taught online and be made accessible across the world!

@advait_woodcrafts finished a beautiful piece of l @advait_woodcrafts finished a beautiful piece of live edge mesquite and invited me to make work that would complement it. I made a few tea sets ranging from rustic to very polished along with a series of yunomis. Pictured here are some that I liked. However, I realize that if asked to choose one, I am unable to decide which set complements the wood best. Does the rustic aesthetic tie in better with the organic wooden base or does the refined set with its contrasting aesthetic work better. I am curious to hear your thoughts. Which one would you pick and why?

Surface Variation in an Electric Kiln Workshop Jun Surface Variation in an Electric Kiln Workshop June 25th and 26th @companiongallery. Link in bio

Every summer, after I am done with my spring commitments, I try to set aside some time to experiment and explore ideas for new surfaces. The inspiration behind these experiments is a simple phrase: "what if"? “What if I crushed this rock and applied it to a pot?” “What if I then put a layer of glaze and ash on that crushed rock?”... And so on and so forth until I find myself deep inside a rabbit hole. Typically, I make a series of test pieces for this purpose. These tests involve meticulous planning and are accompanied by detailed notes. So when I started working on tea bowls for the Teabowl National show I wasn't prepared to be derailed by these “what ifs.” It began as a niggling feeling creeping up in my head which soon completely overwhelmed me and I found myself imprudently committing a whole month’s worth of work to these “what ifs”! As I closed the lid of my kiln and started the program I kept saying to myself, "what were you thinking?!" That twenty four hour wait period for the kiln to fire and cool was a hard one, so much so that even baking my favorite chocolate cake couldn't distract me. When I finally got to open it, the fact that I wasn't seeing a complete disaster made me breathe a sigh of relief. As I examined the pieces closely, I realized that there were some really interesting surfaces in the kiln, some real winners. It was exhilarating to see the results but before I could gloat over my success, I was struck down by the reality that if I wanted to recreate any of these surfaces I really didn't know how, as I had played with too many variables in my unfettered fit of experimentation. So while I am enjoying these pieces and I want to share these with you all, I am going back to testing the “what ifs” step by step, changing one variable at a time so that my next round of surface work is more educated and replicable. I guess the lesson is that there are no shortcuts in life.

These carved pieces are part of a group show calle These carved pieces are part of a group show called 'Surface' curated by the very talented @lakynbowman_art . The show opened today @companiongallery

Though I haven't been carving on a regular basis, it was a lot of fun to revisit this technique and create a body of work specifically to tie in with the theme.

I am so excited to learn that this tea bowl, calle I am so excited to learn that this tea bowl, called "Weathering and Erosion" has been included in the upcoming juried show, GeoLogic, that will be hosted @atlanticgallerynyc .

A big thank you to the juror @brucedehnert for including one of my pieces in the show. I am deeply honored!

When I came across the call for entry for GeoLogic, I was intrigued because it seemed to highlight all that I love about the ceramic process.  I decided to explore the theme from the angle of using clay to represent a geological phenomenon. As a cone 6 oxidation potter, the challenge of creating organic, earthy pieces in an electric kiln has always been a big part of what excites me to go into the studio everyday. GeoLogic gave me just the reason I needed to dive into another series of explorations, this time the quest being, creating a weathered look on a piece. This tea bowl, made using Sedona sandstone, is the culmination of two months of relentless experimentation. That is why the gratification of having this piece included in the show is immense. Thank you, Bruce!

I keep getting amazed by the potential of the elec I keep getting amazed by the potential of the electric kiln and the range of surfaces it is capable of producing. This particular piece, glazed primarily with rocks and gravel collected from different places during my travels, has been my absolute favorite from the last firing. There is so much to learn about the ceramic materials, that's what I love about this field!!!
